911 calling tips

Calling 911 from your wireless phone

  • During an emergency, always provide the operator with your complete phone number including area code.
  • Tell the operator your location and the location of the emergency you're reporting. Not all areas are equipped with Enhanced 911 service, which assists an operator in pinpointing your location.
  • Stay on the line with the operator. Remember, you aren't billed airtime for 911 calls. If the call is disconnected, leave your phone powered on in case the operator needs to call you back.
  • Don't pre-program 911 on your phone. This will reduce the chance of making accidental calls to 911.

What is E911?

Enhanced 911, or E911, is a service that allows emergency operators to provide better assistance to people calling 911 from their mobile phones.

Phase One of E911, made available in 2005, allowed emergency operators to identify a mobile phone number and the location of the cellular site carrying the call. Before the upgrade of emergency networks to E911, phone number and location information for mobile phones was unavailable to operators, making it impossible for them to re-dial a caller in case of a disconnection.

Phase Two of E911 can provide emergency operators with improved location information, which can be used to direct emergency service personnel more precisely to people calling 911 from their mobile phones. Note that operators of 911 emergency call centres must have the necessary E911 phase 2 system enabled in order to utilize the service.

E911 calls from mobile phones are subject to the same limitations as regular calls from mobile phones. For example, if you’re underground or too far from a network antenna, your signal quality may be affected and you may not be able to connect to the network.
